Having a car is no longer a luxury, but a necessity, to a very great extent. However, cars are machines and as such, they are always likely prone to fail at one point or another. There are so many problems that car owners face and this may be at a time when you least expect it.
To reduce the potential for breakdown, and expensive repairs, we’ve listed the 5 most common car problems that tend to pop up.
1. Alternator Problem
The car alternator; this part of your vehicle keeps all electrical systems running once the car starts. It’s also responsible for supplying a charge to your battery to keep it in peak condition.
When the alternator fails to work, this would result in having constant problems with the car battery, thereby causing the car battery to die often.
One common cause that causes a rapid increase in the engine temperature is when there is a faulty alternator.
To be able to tame this, you should always ensure that your car has enough fluids in the radiator and also having a coolant. Regular car servicing will also help in keeping the alternator in great shape.
2. Poor Fuel Economy
When the engine is running, it burns fuel at a rate that helps improve fuel economy. However, several fuel system parts like fuel filters, air filters, mass airflow sensors, and O2 sensors will eventually get dirty or wear out. If this happens before they are replaced, it will cause the engine to consume more fuel than usual
Through regular maintenance and servicing of the fuel system, you will be able to catch most of these issues in good time.
3. Flat Tires
The bad condition of roads in Nigeria is a major source of the bad state of vehicle tires.
It is almost impossible to predict when you will get a flat tire. As such, you should always have a spare wheel in your car, when travelling.
This is irrespective of the distance that you will be driving. Also, ensure that you have all the tools for changing a tire like a wrench, floor jack and jack stands. It is advisable to always consult the tire experts so that they can tell you about the condition of your tires.
Overheating is also a common problem car owners face, but as a result of constant innovation in the automobile industry, the cooling system in most modern cars is very complex, containing many sensors that track coolant temperature, flow and other components.
Changing the water pump before it breaks is a better way to reduce the potential for overheating issues.
5. Dead/faulty Battery
A dead battery is usually caused by reduced amps — or electrical currents — which decrease as the battery loses its ability to maintain a charge. A damaged alternator, battery temperature sensor, or other charging system components can hurry this issue. It’s best to replace your car battery every 50,000 miles or three years, even if it’s not showing signs of damage.
To be able to keep the battery in great shape, you can use lubricants on the terminals, which protects them against corrosion. , you may want to consider the maintenance-free batteries, which are more advanced and will serve you for a very long period of time, without so many issues.
